Design and build under one roof

Owner Armando Soto started out doing yards for his own neighbors, got good at it, and built the company one project at a time before earning his state contractor license in 2019. Today we design and build complete outdoor spaces, from drought-tolerant front yards to full backyard transformations with outdoor kitchens, paver patios, and shade structures.

We do the whole project under one roof. That means the same team that designs your space also installs the masonry, pavers, turf, irrigation, and lighting, so nothing gets lost between subcontractors. Our work has earned the Fresno Bee Best of Central California People's Choice award and 56 Google reviews at a 4.7-star average, most of them describing the same things: clear communication, fair pricing, clean job sites, and a finished yard that looks better than the homeowner pictured.

Whatever you are trying to do, a low-water front yard that survives a Valley summer, an outdoor kitchen for weekend cookouts, or a commercial property that makes the right first impression, one call gets you a real person. Tell us your vision, and we will come out, walk your property, and bring it to life.

About the Owner

A Fresno landscaper who started in his own neighborhood

Specialty Landscape began the way a lot of good trades do. Growing up, Armando Soto would get up in the morning to find neighbors asking him to take care of their yards. He was good at it, word spread, and one yard turned into many. He kept building on that reputation until he earned his California contractor license in 2019 and turned Specialty Landscape into the full design-build company it is today.

That start still shows in how the company works. Armando is personally involved in projects, the crews treat your property with respect, and the goal on every job is simple: understand what you are picturing and build it a little better than you imagined. It is the reason so many customers come back for a second and third project, and why the reviews keep using the same word: vision.

Our Working Process

What Happens When You Call Specialty Landscape

Hiring a landscaper should not be a guessing game. Here is exactly what happens from your first call to the final walk-through.

01
Free on-site consultation
You call or text, and we set a time to come out. There is no charge, and we do not quote a landscape sight unseen. We look at your yard, your grade and drainage, your soil, and how you want to use the space.
02
Design and plan
We walk you through ideas and materials in plain language and shape a plan around your budget and your vision. When a project needs plans for an HOA or a city permit, we prepare those drawings too.
03
A written estimate with no surprises
You get a clear, itemized written estimate. The price we put in writing is the price you'll pay for the scope we quoted, with no hidden fees added after the fact — if site conditions change the scope, we'll walk you through a revised written estimate before any extra work starts.
04
We build it with our own crew
The same Specialty Landscape crew that planned your project builds it, from masonry and pavers to turf, irrigation, and lighting. The site gets cleaned at the end of every day, something customers mention in review after review.
05
Walk-through and aftercare
We finish by walking the project with you to make sure every detail is right. If you want your new landscape kept looking its best, we can set up ongoing maintenance too.

How Specialty Landscape Compares

Most of the risk in a landscape project comes down to who you hire. Here is how a licensed, design-build company stacks up against the options homeowners usually weigh in the Central Valley.

Compare
Specialty Landscape
Unlicensed weekend crews
National maintenance chains
Single-service specialists
Licensed C-27 contractor Varies Varies
Bonded & workers’ comp Varies Varies
Design and build under one roof
Outdoor kitchens & masonry in-house Varies
Owner involved on the job Varies Varies
Written estimate before any work Rarely Varies
Handles HOA & city permit drawings Varies
Water-wise, Valley-climate expertise Varies Varies Varies
Residential and commercial Varies Varies
Cleans the site daily Rarely Varies Varies
Award-winning local track record Varies

An unlicensed weekend crew may quote less, but there is no license, bond, or insurance standing behind the work if something goes wrong on your property. National chains and single-service specialists each do one slice of the job and hand off the rest. Because we design and build the whole project ourselves, from the retaining wall to the irrigation to the lighting, the details line up, and one company is accountable for the result.

The Difference

Why Choose Specialty Landscape

Modern backyard designed and built by Specialty Landscape with paver walkway, artificial turf and planted borders
07 Reasons homeowners
keep choosing us
01
01

A licensed C-27 contractor you can verify

We hold California contractor license CSLB #1058363, and you can look it up on the state board site in about a minute. A license is not a formality. It means the state has verified the contractor and that you have real recourse if a job is not done right.

A lot of Valley yard work is done by crews with no license, no bond, and no insurance. If one of them damages your irrigation main or a worker is hurt on your property, the liability can land on you. With us, that exposure is covered.

02
02

Design and build under one roof

We are not just a mow-and-blow crew, and we are not just a designer who hands you a plan. We design the space and then build every part of it: masonry, pavers, turf, irrigation, lighting, and structures, with our own team.

That is the difference customers feel. Nothing falls through the cracks between a designer and three different subcontractors, because there is only one company standing behind the whole project.

03
03

Armando is on the job

This is an owner-operated, family-rooted business that grew out of one person doing his neighbors’ yards. Armando stays personally involved, and the crews carry that same standard onto every property.

Customers notice. They consistently mention the same things: good communication, respect for the property, and a team that takes pride in the finished result.

04
04

Honest recommendations, no upselling

The fastest way to lose a customer is to sell them something they do not need. We would rather fix the small problem in front of us and earn the next three projects than pad a bill today.

When a homeowner has a small problem, our instinct is to fix that problem, not upsell a rebuild. If a full replacement is not necessary, we will show you why.

05
05

Built for Fresno and the Central Valley

Fresno-area landscapes have to survive clay soils, triple-digit summers, and tightening water rules. We design for that, with drought-tolerant plantings, efficient drip irrigation, shade structures, and turf that stays green without a water bill.

A landscape that ignores the Valley climate looks great for one season and struggles the next. We build yards that hold up, and that keep your water bill in check.

06
06

We bring your vision to life

The best part of this work is taking what a homeowner is picturing and making it real, and often a little better than they imagined. We listen first, then design around how you actually want to use the space.

When plans shift partway through a project, and they often do, we work with you to make it right rather than treating every change as a chance to add a fee. That flexibility is the point.

07
07

Award-winning quality over the cheapest bid

Our work has been recognized as Best of Central California by the Fresno Bee and rated among the top landscapers in the region two years running. That reputation was built one careful project at a time.

The cheapest bid is rarely the best value in landscaping, where shortcuts on base prep, drainage, and materials show up a year later. We build it right the first time, which is why so much of our work comes from referrals and repeat customers.

Before You Hire

What to Ask Any Landscaping Contractor Before You Hire

These questions help you hire a good landscaper no matter who you choose. The single most important one is the first.

Finished front yard with artificial turf, an olive tree and a stone planter wall

We are happy to answer all seven for your project. Ask us anything, and we will give you a straight answer.

Call or text (559) 905-2273
Are you a licensed contractor?

In California, ask for the C-27 landscape contractor license number and verify it on the CSLB site. Unlicensed crews cannot legally take on larger projects and leave you without recourse.

Are you bonded and insured, with workers’ compensation? +

Ask to see proof. If a worker is hurt on your property and the contractor has no workers’ comp, the liability can fall to you.

Who actually does the work, and will the owner be involved? +

Ask whether the crew is in-house or subcontracted, and who is accountable if something needs to be fixed.

Will I get a written, itemized estimate? +

A real quote comes after someone walks your property. Get the scope and price in writing before any work starts.

How will you handle our clay soil, drainage, and water use? +

A Valley-savvy contractor should talk about base prep, drainage, drip irrigation, and drought-tolerant options, not just plants.

What do you warrant, and for how long? +

Ask what is covered on workmanship versus plant material, and get it in writing.

Do you handle HOA and city permits or drawings if my project needs them? +

Some projects need approvals, and you want to know up front who prepares and submits them.

Good to Know

Frequently Asked Questions

The questions we hear most across the Valley, answered straight.

Do you charge for an estimate?

No. Estimates are free. We come out, walk your property, and give you an honest written estimate with no obligation. We do not quote a landscape sight unseen.

How much does a landscaping project cost?

It depends on the size of the space, the materials, and how much hardscape, masonry, or structure is involved. After we see your yard, you get a clear, itemized estimate so there are no surprises. We work with your budget and tell you honestly what it will take to do it right.

How long does a project take?

A focused project like turf or a paver patio can be a matter of days, while a full backyard transformation with masonry, an outdoor kitchen, and planting runs longer. We give you a realistic timeline with your estimate and keep you updated as the work moves.

Do you design drought-tolerant and water-wise landscapes?

Yes, and in the Central Valley it is one of the smartest things you can do. We design low-water, drought-tolerant landscapes with the right plant selection, efficient drip irrigation, and options like artificial turf that stay green without a water bill.

Do you install artificial turf?

Yes. Artificial turf is one of our most-requested services because it stays green through a Valley summer with no watering, mowing, or brown patches. We prep the base properly so it drains and lies flat with no visible seams.

Do you build outdoor kitchens, patios, and fire features?

Yes. Outdoor kitchens, BBQ islands, paver and stamped-concrete patios, fireplaces, and fire pits are core work for us. We self-perform the masonry, hardscape, and finish work and coordinate the gas and electrical through our licensed trade partners. It is a big part of what makes a backyard usable and worth spending time in.

Are you licensed and insured?

Yes. We hold California contractor license CSLB #1058363 (C-27 landscaping, with D-49 tree service and D-03 awnings), and we are bonded and insured with active workers’ compensation. You can verify the license on the CSLB website.

Do you handle HOA and city permits or drawings?

Yes. When a project needs plans for an HOA or a city permit, we prepare those drawings as part of the design. We will tell you up front whether your project needs approvals and help you through the process.

Do you offer ongoing maintenance?

Yes. We can keep your landscape looking its best with seasonal cleanups, trimming, mulching, fertilization, and weed control. We handle recurring maintenance for both homes and commercial properties.

Do you do commercial and HOA landscaping?

Yes, and it is work we are growing. We handle design, installation, and ongoing maintenance for HOAs, apartment complexes, business parks, and retail centers. Being a licensed, bonded, insured contractor is exactly what property managers need on file.

What areas do you serve?

We are based in Fresno and serve Clovis, Sanger, Madera, Selma, Reedley, Kingsburg, and communities across Fresno and Madera counties. If your town is not on our list, call us; we very likely cover it.

Should I redo my whole yard or just part of it?

Either. Plenty of our projects are one focused piece, a patio, a front-yard refresh, a fix to drainage, and plenty are full transformations. We give you honest options for both and never push a bigger project than you want.
